The Art of
Wearing Chikankari
Chikankari is not just fabric — it is a conversation between artisan and wearer. Here are our experts' secrets to making every Lucknawi piece look like it was made just for you.
For weddings and festive events, opt for Chikankari on georgette or organza — the fabric has a natural sheen that photographs beautifully. For office and daily wear, cotton Chikankari is breathable and dignified. Silk is reserved for the grandest celebrations.
A dupatta is the soul of the look. Drape one end over your shoulder and let the other fall naturally in front for a traditional feel. Pin it at the shoulder with a brooch for modern festive occasions. For kurta sets, tuck one end into the waist for a structured silhouette.
Ivory embroidery is a canvas — let your accessories speak. Gold jhumkas and a kundan maang tikka elevate it to bridal. Minimalist silver hoops and a leather clutch make it office-appropriate. Oxidised silver jewellery gives it a bohemian edge perfect for mehendi or haldi.
Layer a sheer chiffon jacket or a tailored blazer over your kurta for outdoor evening events. A pashmina shawl in a complementary colour adds warmth without hiding the embroidery. Avoid heavy jackets that clash with the delicate Chikankari work.
Always hand wash in cold water with mild detergent — never wring or machine wash. Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight to preserve the thread colour. Iron on reverse at low temperature. Store folded in muslin, never hung, to protect the embroidery.
Your kurta top doesn't have to live with its matching bottom forever. Pair a Chikankari kurta with solid palazzo pants, jeans, or wide-leg trousers for a contemporary look. Conversely, a Chikankari trouser with a solid silk blouse is unexpectedly elegant.
